About Chelsea, Alabama
Though Chelsea was incorporated more recently than other nearby cities, it has grown immensely in the intervening years to become one of the largest in the Birmingham area.
Two historical districts – Chesser Crane Road and Highway 39 – showcase the community’s roots before its incorporation. Many early homes were built in a traditional style, while new homes are being built in several developing communities like Chelsea Park and Willow Branch. Home styles and prices vary based on neighborhood and location.
Chelsea is a haven for the civic-minded, with dozens of service clubs and volunteer organizations contributing to its progress as a community.
It is ranked among the safest cities in the U.S., and its school system has been listed among the best in the state thanks to course offerings, talented teachers, and graduation rates.
The city is home to several attractions that highlight the area’s natural beauty. The 740-acre Chelsea Recreational Park is filled with sports fields, playgrounds, and walking trails. Veterans Park, which features a lake, a pavilion, and a walking trail, offers art exhibits, classes, concerts, and other events. Visitors also can see the city's beautiful rose garden, which is Chelsea’s official flower.
Numerous city parks and sports complexes play host to baseball and softball tournaments, family reunions, and other events. Any resident can become a member of the Chelsea Community Center.
Chelsea has long been a shopping destination because of the Chelsea Corners Shopping Center, one of the area’s largest shopping centers. The mall includes stores, office space, restaurants, and a hotel.
The best restaurants run the gamut from authentic Italian cuisine at La Bella's to the upscale menu at The Chelsea Restaurant to the Southern comfort food at Tin Top BBQ.
