Though Hoover was incorporated more recently than other nearby cities, it has grown immensely in the intervening years to become one of the largest in the Birmingham area.

Two historical districts – Park Avenue and Shades Crest Road – showcase the community’s roots before its incorporation. Many early homes were built in a traditional style, while new homes are being built in several developing communities like Ross Bridge and Bluff Park. Home styles and prices vary based on neighborhood and location.

Hoover is a haven for the civic-minded, with dozens of service clubs and volunteer organizations contributing to its progress as a community.

It is ranked among the safest cities in the U.S., and its school system has been listed among the best in the state thanks to course offerings, talented teachers and graduation rates.

The city is home to several attractions that highlight the area’s natural beauty. The 349-acre Moss Rock Preserve is filled with streams, waterfalls, wildlife and hiking trails. Aldridge Gardens, which features a lake, a pavilion, and a walking trail, offers art exhibits, classes, concerts, and other events. Visitors also can see the snowflake hydrangea, the city’s official flower.

Numerous city parks and sports complexes play host to baseball and softball tournaments, family reunions and other events. Any resident can become a member of the Hoover Recreation Center.

Hoover has long been a shopping destination because of the Riverchase Galleria, one of the Southeast’s largest shopping centers. The mall includes stores, office space, restaurants, and a hotel.

The best restaurants run the gamut from authentic Chinese cuisine at Mr. Chen’s to the upscale menu at J. Alexander’s to the spicy Cajun cooking of Jubilee Joe’s.
